Driving in France:

If you are unfamiliar with driving in France, here are some helpful tips. In France, they drive on the right side of the road, which may be different from what you are used to. The biggest challenges of driving on the opposite side are starting after a stop and making right turns. French drivers tend to drive very close to other cars, so be cautious when braking abruptly to avoid any accidents. In France, flashing headlights mean "I am here, and you need to move out of my way" rather than "after you" like in the UK. It is also common for drivers to use their headlights to warn others of police ahead. The police, known as "flics," often conduct checks, so it is essential to carry your driving license and all necessary car documents, including the logbook. If you fail to do so, you may receive an on-the-spot fine, which you must pay immediately as a non-resident. Attempting to avoid the fine by pretending not to understand or speak French will not work, as they have multilingual fine forms and may even escort you to a cash machine to withdraw the required amount. If you do receive a fine, be sure to ask for a receipt, known as "Un recu sil vous plait," to avoid any further fines being sent to you after your trip. On-the-spot fines are issued for various offenses, including speeding. Speed limits in France are as follows: 50 kilometers per hour (30mph) in towns, 90 kph (56mph) on ordinary roads, 110 kph (70mph) on dual carriageways (only when indicated by road signs), and 130 kph (81mph) on motorways (autoroutes). The last two limits are reduced by 20 kph in rainy conditions. Police are vigilant about enforcing these limits and may target motorists at stop signs or for overtaking and crossing continuous white lines. When overtaking, use your indicators and provide ample room, especially when passing cyclists, as they are protected on French roads. Roundabouts in France can be chaotic, with a lack of lane discipline and signaling, so be cautious when navigating them. Traffic jams are common on motorways, particularly during the summer and near toll booths (peages). Look out for warning signs marked "BOUCHON" (meaning "traffic jam") and proceed with caution. Most motorways in France require a toll payment, but they are generally affordable and safer than alternative routes. There are two payment systems: either a set price for a shorter distance or a ticket system where you pay at the end of your journey. Pay attention to the lanes marked for manned payment, usually indicated by signs with a green arrow and a man symbol. Failure to use the correct lane may result in an entertaining encounter that could land you on television on the French equivalent of Candid Camera. Service stations are available on motorways, including rest areas called "Aire de Repos," which are convenient places to take a break. However, it is advisable to use service stations, especially at night, as some remote lay-bys have been known to attract highwaymen who may not only steal your money but also your car and belongings. This can be particularly uncomfortable as the lay-bys are often cold, filled with mosquitoes, and you may find yourself standing there in the nude! Speed limit signs are not always present at the entrance of villages or towns in France, as they are often combined with town signs. When the town name is on a sign edged in red, it indicates a 50 kph speed limit unless otherwise indicated. The speed limit ends when the town sign has a red line through it. In some areas, you may encounter "priorite a droite," which means vehicles entering from the right have right of way. Pay attention to this rule, especially in towns and on small country lanes. Have a pleasant journey!

Calais to Parleboscq:
This is the longest possible journey. Depart Calais on the A16 autoroute towards Boulogne and Abbeville. At Abbeville, take the A28 autoroute towards Rouen, but do not proceed to Rouen. Instead, follow signs for "PONT de NORMANDIE" and cross the bridge. Continue on the autoroute towards Caen. At Caen, follow signs for Rennes, which will take you around the south side of Caen and onto the A84 autoroute. This will lead you to the outskirts of Rennes. From Rennes, follow signs for Nantes on the N137 road. Just outside Nantes, you will see signs for Bordeaux. Follow these signs and go around the ring road (rocade), which includes an impressive bridge over the Loire river. After crossing the bridge, look for a sign indicating Bordeaux via the A83 autoroute. Join the autoroute and continue until it merges with the A10. Keep heading south on the A10 until you reach the toll booth just north of Bordeaux. The toll fee is approximately 24 Euros. After passing through the tolls, stay on the motorway until you see signs for Toulouse. Take the Toulouse exit and join the A62 autoroute. Continue along the A62 until you reach junction 5
