Description for B&B:

Maison Rives, a historic building dating back to before the French Revolution, holds a captivating story that parallels the charm of Montolieu itself. Each room is adorned with furnishings that perfectly complement the abundant natural light streaming through the windows. Whether you prefer a view of the bridge and Alzeau Gorge or a glimpse of the village streets, our spacious, airy rooms with en-suite facilities will surely meet your expectations.

Start your day with a delightful breakfast in the salon, where we are happy to assist you in planning your day or providing directions if needed. Additionally, we offer dinner options and organize thematic courses, including innovative cooking classes featuring regional, organic ingredients, photography walks and workshops, and calligraphy training.

Families with children are more than welcome at Maison Rives, although we regretfully cannot accommodate pets. Conveniently, there are two easily accessible car parks available, one located 150m away and the other 200m away.

Montolieu, originally known as Montis Olivis or Mount of Olives, proudly sits atop a rocky ridge that separates the Alzeau and Dure Rivers at the base of the magnificent Montagne Noire. This picturesque village in the Aude region of France boasts both a rich historical heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. Surrounded by Cathar castles, caves, abbeys, lush forests, rolling fields, pristine rivers, and serene lakes, Montolieu has a historical pedigree that matches its stunning surroundings. Notable figures such as Charlemagne and Colbert have left their mark on this village, with Charlemagne founding the Monastery of St. Jean de Mallast in 800 AD and Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, establishing a Royal Manufactory renowned for its high-quality woolen cloth. In 1146, the Viscount of nearby Carcassonne fortified the village, and its early inhabitants, aside from nuns and monks, thrived by cultivating vineyards and olive groves. They also harnessed the power of the river torrents to operate successful textile and paper mills. However, as times changed, the glory days came to an end over fifty years ago, causing the community of over 3,000 to dwindle to around 900 residents.

Fortunately, a book enthusiast stepped in to ignite Montolieu's modern-day renaissance as a book village, known as a "village du livre." Today, the village attracts numerous visitors each year, including those who may not be bibliophiles but still appreciate the allure of Montolieu. While book lovers explore the village's charming bookshops, non-bibliophiles can partake in the various outdoor activities offered by Montolieu's abundant natural and historical treasures.
